Gratitude Journals — Feel- Good hack? Or Just a Plain Quack?

The scientist in me says I’m skeptical, but here’s what I found, scientifically speaking…

“Count your blessings” is medicine.

In 2018, I received a call from my wife. At that time, I knew she was in the hospital, to talk to her doctor.

After we exchanged pleasantries, her voice became lower, and told me “They found a tumor in my breast”.

There was a pause.

I didn’t say anything and took a slightly deep breath.

She started to cry.

I remember the movie ‘lone survivor’, a real life movie of a Navy Seals in Afghanistan who was the only survivor of an ambush. In an interview, he said that when the ripper was on the doorstep, even though he prepared himself to die because of the nature of his job, he was scared as hell.

When he saw his colleagues injured and slowly dying in front of him, he knew he was next.

Nothing prepares you in these moments. (You know he survived, and I don’t want to spoil the story, but he travelled crawling, using a knife to drag himself, cause his lower body was useless from falling and dropping from a mountain. Did I mentioned he dragged himself with a knife for 26 miles?).
