How do you get by fear?

--

It’s no secret, we are not where we are because we are scared.

How do you get by fear?

You are not in the level you want because you are scared, one book told me. And it’s true, I must admit, I am scared of not having a job right now, or continuing to hustle, because I’m scared.

If fear holds us down, how can we stop it.

I been wrestling with this question for a long time, and I been hearing advice like “just do it”, “The opposite of fear is not courage,” but all these things are cliche to me anyway if there’s no practical way of getting over fear.

When I was young, I was scared of the dark. I must admit, living in the rural part of the Philippines, streetlight is not that common.

In this situation, I was really scared of the dark. My soccer team mates from high school would schedule a practice at 5 AM, so I have to walk the streets to go to the soccer field that I sometimes just run fast as I can until I see my team mates on the field.

I literally bull rush my fears.

Still, I am so amazed by those people in the athletic world that they just spike the ball for the kicker to kick after engineering a comeback near the goal line.

It’ like another day in the office.

Different kinds of fears

As an adult, my fears are different now. I realized, as an adult, you have to uncover the dears in order to face what’s bothering you.

This is how I started journaling (or even writing in Medium).

When I write what’s in my mind, I uncover fears that doesn’t rear it’s ugly head if you don’t go deep in your mind or subconcious.

So, journaling works?

I think so.

I started writing gratitude journal after my wife’s doctor recommended it. When my wife was diagnosed with stage 0 breast cancer, her doctor asked her to write gratitude journal.

She didn’t. I did.

What I found in my writing later that it refocuses me. Then when I just started journaling, I discovered deep seated fears in my subconscious mind.

I started to realize that I was scared of being ruin was the first fear that came in my mind when I started journaling.

That means, I never started something, such as writing my book, because I will be ruin if I’m not successful.

Knowing that I was scared prompted me to start writing my book again.

More days of journaling made me realized that I was scared if I fail, I’ll regret my decision. How is this possible?

Because deep inside, I feared that if I continue doing what I been doing, I will regret my decision in the end.

Fear comes to you in many ways, unearth it first, and you can find a solution to your problem most likely.

Here are the fears we should be aware of:

  1. Rejection fear
  2. Ruin fear (not doing business anymore).
  3. Fear of potential regret.
  4. Fear of responsiblity.
