It was two years after the turn of the century (I just like saying “century” — it sounds dramatic) when I first arrived in the U.S. to study exercise science at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Back then, I had no clue how American football was played, let alone how scoring worked.

But that was also the year I got my first taste of how Americans throw a party for the big game.

If you remember, the Tampa Bay Bucs crushed the Oakland Raiders that year. I’ll never forget my roommate yelling, “We’re ahead, dude! We’re ahead!” — as if we were personally on the field.

The Super Bowl and the party were over, and with it went the wings, nachos, endless dips — and of course, all those extra calories hitching a ride.

If you’ve ever tried to lose weight, you’ve probably struggled — maybe even crashed and burned a few times. It’s easy to blame parties and gatherings for throwing you off track.

But here’s the truth: The problem isn’t the Super Bowl party — it’s how you think about parties in general. Because believe me, there will be more parties coming in your life.
