Humans are Dumb (in task switching): Lessons on Focus

We are suckers for irrelevancy

Monday, May 23, 2022.

Dear Koji,

It’s your final exams as 8th grader. I reminded you to study. But every time I check on you, you are on your phone. You are distracted. (In my later letter, I’ll tell you more how to concentrate and focus that will put those monks to shame).

Here’s the thing: you try to multitask but in reality, it’s slowing you down. You are the one who told me to use the Pomodoro App to focus on my task. I did that too.

Especially in my business, when I work alone in the kitchen, I do the Pomodoro App. I focus for 30 minutes and have a break in between. It’s usually a five-minute break and then a 10-minute break after.

Breaks are important, because the mind cannot sustain long work and concentration.

That’s it for now. In my next letter, I’ll tell you the secret of focus that will put most of the monks to shame.

Love,

Mommy and Daddy.
