I revisited the book “The One Thing”, and here’s what resonated with me again.

Powerful messages hit me like a 2 by 2

When I was watching my son’s basketball practice, one of the plays they were practicing was messed up by one of the big men.

So the volounter coach asked to run it again. I can see the frustration in the coach’s body language and voice. But the coach was still patient.

But every time, the kid would swear under his breath, “I did it the way you asked me to do it coach, what’s wrong with my move?”

So the coach would tell the kid again, demonstrate the proper way of doing the play.

Frustrated, the kid walked out when the practice was over.

I grabbed Koji and told him, “The reason that kid never learns, is because he thought he was right and doesn’t want to be corrected.”

That remind me of a saying in the book “The One thing”. But I can’t remember the exact saying. I googled the phrase and nothing came up.

It was something along the lines of “If you keep fighting for it, and it’s wrong, you are going to get it”.

That kid, who doesn’t want to learn, keeps fighting for his mistakes, and he’s going to get the same results.

How many times are we like that kid? I know I was. But after that powerful message from that book, I changed my ways. I always welcome criticism now.

I know it hurts to be corrected. It sucks. But that’s how you grow. And that was the lesson I was telling Koji.

Anway, here’s some powerful lessons I learned from that book “The One Thing”

“The One Thing” by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan contains several popular quotes, including:

  1. “Success is not a marathon of good feelings. It is the result of your willingness to do the hard things, to do the one thing you need to do when you need to do it, whether you feel like it or not.” — Gary Keller
  2. “The key to success is not in simply thinking about your one thing, but in repeatedly and consistently taking small steps and actions towards it.” — Jay Papasan
  3. “Extraordinary results are directly determined by how narrow you can make your focus.” — Gary Keller
  4. “Success is sequential, not simultaneous.” — Gary Keller
  5. “The truth is that we can’t make time. Time is something that just is. But we can make plenty of room for the important things in life by controlling what we choose to focus on.” — Jay Papasan
  6. “What’s the ONE Thing you can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?” — Gary Keller

These quotes highlight the central idea of the book, which is that focusing on one important thing at a time can lead to extraordinary results in life and business.
