Publish or perish, what does it mean to you?
The mantra is big in academia, does it apply to you too?
During my years as a graduate student in chemistry, I went to a research group that was relatively new. The professor just came from the Netherlands to establish himself.
I didn’t know at that time, if you are in the academia and you want to establish your self as an expert in the field, you need to publish. Publishing is the lifeline of every young scientists in the academia.
So in our group, we tried to publish our experimental results. In this way, the more research paper the new professor get out in the world, the greater the chance of the new professor to be funded and tenured.
I think it is the same way for people who are in the internet marketing world — you publish or perish.
The content you publish will sow the seeds of your success. My mentor Russel Brunson, in his own ways, advised us to follow the rules of internet marketing, especially the direct response marketing.
These rules are:
- A confused mind always say no.
- Never sell to broke people.
- Publish everyday.
The “publish everyday” rule is the hardest to do. And the rules can be bend depending on what platform you use. For example, in YouTube, you can probably create and publish a video 3 times a week. In podcast, twice a week.
Why do you need to publish?
The first reason why you need to publish is that show the world that you and your business exist. You can do paid advertising but with publishing your content, it’s a free ad.
Second is that you want to develop your voice so people will follow you. Once you have a follower, that’s when you can sell your goods and services to your followers.
Easier said than done, but it can be done.
There are people in the marketing world that have done what I conveyed and crushed the competition. If you are in the marketing world, you heard of Gary Vaynerchuk, who expanded his wine business through social media.
There’s Tony Robbins or Dan Lok. These names are the bigwigs of social media influencer. They probably not write or compose all their videos and content but you can see them very active in almost every media platform.
So what does it mean for us?
Publish almost everyday, people will start following you if you have great content. If you tell great stories, you will be followed.
And this is the very reason I write. I mean I love to write, to be honest, I self published a book (Reconnected, by Emilio Cagmat, available on Amazon.). When I wrote the book, I asked people from Kickstarter to fund the publishing of my book.
Today, I still love to write and publish, but not a book, Although I published scientific articles and book chapters of scientific books, I started to love publishing with purpose of marketing.
I switched away from the formal scientific writing, to writing a novel, to mastering writing words that sells. This kind of writing is called copywriting.
Today, publish or perish to me meant sales. If I didn’t write it well, then there’s no money coming in for the company.
