This is Why People Can’t Keep Going — and How Navy SEALs Crush This Barrier

Every endeavor starts with the question that will push you through hard times.

When I was a graduate student at the University of Central Florida down in Orlando (Go Golden Knights!), I encountered a guy training in the pool.

Somebody told me that he was training for the Navy Seals. He failed in his first attempt but will try again.

To increase his chances, he was training every evening in the university pool. At that time, as a graduate student of exercise science, I was actively participating on triathlons, and I was there training for swimming.

Here’s the thing, when I asked myself, why would you ‘go again do the hellish workout of the Navy Seals if you failed already?’

It took me a good amount of time before the answer came to me.

It hit me.

The ideas came from attending seminars and related to psychology. And here it goes:

It wasn’t about proving anything to anyone else; it was about proving something to himself. There was a drive inside him, something beyond pride or just getting a tough job. It was a motivation that went deep, powered by his own sense of purpose and direction.
