What this popular New York Bagel Store in Florida thought me about writing and marketing.
In my last piece, I wrote about retiring myself before 50 years old. I mentioned also in that piece, my wife and I ate at a popular New Tork Bagel Store.
What’s not congruent here is that I live in Florida, and a New York Bagel is popular in our community?
There are probably other bagel stores in Gainesville, Fl, that claims like a New York bagel, but how did Luke’s, a popular bagel store pulled it off as the best NY bagel in our community?
Unique Story
Every writer knows that in order to sell, you should have a unique story, and you should market better.
Marketing, as one of the teachers I was following, define marketing as: changing beliefs through stories.
If you look at Luke’s Bagel, their story in their website is that they replicated the water from New York to make their bagels in Gainesville.
“Water is water, is H2O, what makes it different?” My wife, who is a chemist like me, asked.
‘What they are proclaiming is that the mineral content in their water that makes the bagel, is the same as that of NY water’, I explained.
That’s a pretty good story.
I’m not a good judge of bagels, but I like their bagels though. Other customers would say it’s closest to what New York authentic bagel tastes (and these people I talk grew up from NY).
Now let’s go back to the marketing definition that we have above. It’s telling us that the NY water story changed people’s belief that these bagels is authentic NY bagel.
A change in belief.
Through a story.
Your writing should be your unique story…
When I first encountered ChatGPT, I was floored on what it was capable of. I tried to use it in my letters, but in the end, it doesn’t sound like me.
Koji, my 9th grade kid, told me a senior from his high school was caught using ChatGPT, because the teacher deduce that he can’t write the complicated essay the student submitted.
I have to explain to Koji that each and every one of us has voice, a voice unique to us.
Koji look at me and asked, ‘but this is writing, not speaking?’
I explained that even how Donald Trump has it’s own voice, and I will know it’s Trump writing because I know his voice (how he talks). That’s voice.
In addition, I gave another example how the Unabomber was caught. The terrorist wrote a manifesto to the FBI, and the FBI leaked the document to the press hoping that the ‘voice’ of his writing will be recognize by somebody.
The brother of the Unabomber recognized the voice, and that’s how the Unabomber was caught.
Nobody can hack your story…
In writing and in marketing, your unique story is powerful.
I was once in a marketing seminars and conference, and I remember that the speaker was asking the audience to keep writing your story, because that’s a story that nobody can hack…
